The Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) has unveiled its mission statement, following its registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) last Friday.
The new party, which has its root from late Shehu Musa Yar’adua’s PDM, has associates of the former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as members.
Pundits say the new party may pose a threat to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the newly registered All Progressives Congress (APC) that was formed by three key political parties.
But the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the PDM could not pose any threat to its mission to save Nigeria from the brink of collapse.
Mohammed, in an interview with Sunday Trust yesterday, hailed the registration of PDM, but said the new party would queue behind APC, adding that “we are sufficiently so big that we can’t be threatened by any political party in Nigeria”.
He said, “I think we welcome them into the fold. But we are not one bit threatened. You see we went into the merger with a mission and a purpose- which is to rescue Nigeria from the brink of collapse. That has not changed at all. Today, we are sufficiently so big that we can’t be threatened by any political party in Nigeria.“And why should we be threatened in any effect? Any political party that comes in now will queue up behind us. We should not be worried. Don’t forget that in politics, what decides electoral victory of political party will be those behind it, the strength of the party, the track records of its promoters and what they are going to offer Nigeria. And that is all. I think we are not lacking in any of these compartments. We welcome them to the fold; the more the merrier,” he added.
On the ongoing activities of the APC, Mohammed said “we have embarked on mass mobilization. We are preparing for registration. We have set up a task force to handle the Anambra election in November. There will be a meeting of the party on the 21st of this month (Wednesday)”.
In its mission statement which was sent via email to Sunday Trust yesterday, the PDM National Chairman, Bashir Yusuf Ibrahim, expressed the party’s readiness to find lasting solutions to the mounting social, economic and political problems in Nigeria through the institutionalization of a democratic culture that guarantees the rule of law, public accountability and the legitimacy of dissent.
Ibrahim, who was a former special assistant to Atiku and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, also voiced the need to come to terms with the problem of evolving a durable civic culture that believes in the dignity and autonomy of the human person and his individual rights.
He said such civic culture must not only be the one that promotes trust, tolerance, consensus through accommodation and compromise, equity and justice, but also that engenders a public spirit and a positive commitment to people as legitimate partners in national development.
He said the mission statement of the PDM believed that for any social order to be viable and enduring, it must ensure the promotion of national unity by reducing social tension, mistrust, ethnic marginalization, religious intolerance and nepotism.
“Based on the principles and determined will of our members, the PDM has a common vision of hope; the hope that the Nigerian State can still be developed into a modern nation; a nation that will posses real capability to harness her natural resources for the upliftment of the welfare of her people; a nation that will be just, peaceful and politically stable; a nation which will be capable of defending her interests anywhere and everywhere and command international respect; a nation in which all citizens will have the opportunity to lead useful and satisfactory lives,” it added.
Ibrahim, while further highlighting the mission statement of the PDM, voiced the readiness of the party to pursue a set of objectives that will guarantee the following:
“That economic and political power are genuinely democratized through political grassroots participation in the structures and organization of power. In other words, sovereignty, in all its ramifications, belongs to the people alone;
“That leadership will be sought through a rational arrangement which will be informed by the common good and sustained by the popular will of the people;
“That leaders must live by example through personal integrity, honesty, sincerity and commitment to fair play in the service of the people;
“That a new political order is established which will compel the leadership to always balance power and authority with service and accountability. The system will thus guarantee social justice, equality of opportunities, national loyalty and patriotism;
“That all economic policies are directed towards national self-reliance which is the cornerstone of genuine development and nation-building;
“That all efforts will be made to stamp out all anti social behavior such as corruption, terrorism, indiscipline, lack of national commitment and avarice”.
The INEC had on Friday announced the registration of two new political parties; the Independent Democrats and the Peoples Democratic Movement, a party that is being linked to Atiku Abubakar in a statement by the National Secretary of the commission, Mrs. Augusta Ogakwu.
Last Thursday, Atiku had said that his associates were involved in the registration of the PDM, following reports that he and his men had applied for the registration of the PDM because he was sidelined in the Peoples Democratic Party.
 

Femi Fani Kayode Regrets Revealing His Relationship With Bianca

Former Aviation minister Femi Fani Kayode has apologised for mentioning the names of three Igbo girlfriends he has had inmate relationship with in the past. The former minister, trying to prove he is not tribalistic, earlier in the week, mentioned the name of Bianca Ojukwu, the beautiful widow of Chief Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, alongside two other Igbo ladies women whom he claims has had long-standing intimate relationship with.

Former Aviation minister, Femi Fani Kayode, has apologised for mentioning the names of three Igbo girlfriends he has had intimate relationship with in the past. The former minister, earlier in the week, mentioned the names of three Igbo ladies he has had intimate relationship with to prove he wasn't tribalistic.

According to him, “I was not a tribalist when I had a long-standing and intimate relationship with Miss Bianca Onoh, an Igbo lady, who later married Colonel Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu the leader of Biafra and who is now our Ambassador in Spain. I was not a tribalist when I had a long-standing and intimate relationship with Miss Chioma Anasoh, another Igbo lady, who I almost married. I was not a tribalist when I had a long-standing and intimate relationship with Miss Adaobi Uchegbu, another Igbo lady, who was exceptionally close to me and who is now a leading figure at the national headquarters of the ruling PDP.” 

Realising he went too far, the former minister issued a letter of apology through his press Secretary Mr Bisi Lawal. According to the statement, “Chief Femi Fani-Kayode hereby expresses his deepest regrets for mentioning the names of three distinguished Nigerian ladies that he was once associated with in his last article titled ''A Word For Those Who Say I am A Tribalist''. He meant no harm by doing so and neither did he at any point make references to having had any sexual relations with any of these ladies when they were associated with him as is being suggested by some members of the public.”

The statement also revealed that the former minister has reached two of the ladies concerned and has personally conveyed his unreserved apology to them and families for his indiscretion. Kayode also promised to reach out to the third lady in the next few days.

From last year, the incidents of severe flood disasters have been the nightmare of governments, communities and individuals, who have suffered various degrees of losses. But hope of providing minimal succour to affected victims is still a distant echo, even  as threats of fresh flooding looms large as relived in this report.

In recent times, Nigerians in many states of the federation, especially in the North have lived with the nightmare of devastating floods.  It has consumed lives, ravaged   communities, destroyed properties and rendered many more homeless and destitute.
Weekly Trust investigations avail that with no alternatives abodes for settlement, many of the victims go back to inhabit the same abodes flooding pushed them out, as soon as the water recedes.
The plight of victims finds illustration in the pungent and repeated calls by Sokoto State, governor Aliyu Wamakko    for people living in flood prone areas to vacate such places in order to avoid any ugly occurrence. But these calls are hardly obeyed in most states where people are in this dilemma, as there are no signs of relocation to safer areas by majority of people.
“We have nowhere to move to,” Sulaiman, one of those living in a flood prone area in Sokoto stated, adding that  though they were seriously affected by flood last year,  but have  no alternative areas  to relocate .
Similarly, in the Nassarawa Gidan Igwe area of the state,  a high risk  flood area, visible  signs of the previous flood problems are  still manifest. But the residents go about their normal business, as if everything has normalized and more to it,  new structures are springing up in the area.
The inhabitants added,  “as long as we don’t have a choice, we will remain here. We will only run to our neighbours if the flood comes and when it goes, we shall come back. But if we get safer places, we are ever ready to vacate because we wouldn’t want to face the devastating flood problem, the government should assist poor ones like us. We don’t have anywhere to go”.
A youth leader in the area, Murtala appealed for government’s intervention saying it’s hard for a poor man to vacate his place when he does not have an alternative. He added  that those with families , more than a wife,  with many children are  hit hardest  by this problem of relocation.
But Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Jabbo Kilgori said there are provisions for people in most of the flood prone areas, to move to  higher  ground level lands,  which he said was provided  by  the local governments for affected people to relocate.
He described the Nassarawa Gidan Igwe as a very dangerous area in terms of flood disasters.
“These people are not really supposed to be there. That place is supposed to be  farm land and  not residential area.  It  is an encroachment they have done into the riverine areas and I think the Sokoto North  local government  and Wamakko are doing something on that”, he stated.
“We heard the announcement over the radio that people living in flood prone areas should relocate,  but we don’t know where to go to. If government can assist us to move to another environment, we would gladly relocate,” the inhabitants stated.
Same agonies over flood have been the lot of some LGAs in  Katsina state. So  far,  the  five LGAs of Kankia, Charanchi, Mashi, Daura and Zango have been severely  affected by flood.
Though,  no life was lost, but dozens were rendered homeless, scores of domestic animals killed and crops  as well as household items worth millions of naira were  destroyed by the disaster.
Like previous disasters, this year’s flooding in Katsina happened following heavy down pours experienced in the state  weeks back. Weekly Trust gathered that the disaster has wrecked havoc on some communities in the five affected local governments.
In Charanchi  LGA   for instance,  the entire village of Gadar-Yantuluna was sacked by the flood spearing only a community mosque in the village. Victims of the disaster, who took refuge at  four classrooms block of a primary school in a near-by village of Kartaka, said the flood has destroyed properties worth millions of naira.
They expressed fear for outbreak of diseases due to overcrowding  the makeshift camps, as they alleged that they were creamed together in a four classroom  block at the camp. One of them, Sabi’u Mai-unguwa said “Virtually all our houses were affected by the flood. The structure that was spared by the flood was the village mosque; its structure, roofing and windows were all intact.”
The Transition Management Committee Chairman of Charanchi council, Yahaya Galadima who led other officials of the council to the village on an assessment visit, said the council had concluded arrangements to relocate the community to another place.
Galadima said the council has also provided relief materials which included foodstuff, mat and drugs to the victims assuring that the ‘council would sustain constant supply of food, water and clothing to the affected victims.”
In Zango local government, Weekly Trust gathered that 580 houses have been destroyed and crops worth millions of naira washed away by the flood.
Even last year,  18 out of the 34 LGAs  of the state  were affected by the disaster and seven persons confirmed killed by it in Safana, Mai’Adua, Kurfi and Mani LGAs.
However, victims of this year’s flood disaster in the state have so far received donation of relief materials from the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA). The agency’s Director-General, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sidi  last week,  donated relief items worth millions of naira to the victims.
However, Benue state seems to be   lucky this year as they have so far not recorded   any incident of recent floods. Regardless of this seeming blessing, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) says it is ready to combat the tides if it  changes, especially with over 36,000 persons displaced in more than  five LGAs  of the state which included; Makurdi, Agatu, Gwer-west, Logo and Kastina-ala respectively in  last year’s flooding .
 The state government said it is not leaving anything to chance against the background of last year’s floods which caused unprecedented economic losses and human sufferings to people  in the state.
SEMA’s executive secretary, Adikpo Agbatse disclosed that a minimum of 6,000 farmers were affected to the extent that the incurred loses worth N1.6 billion. Besides, over N19 billion damages were reportedly lost to the flood last year.
He explained that 12 local government areas have already been mapped as flood disaster prone areas and likely to experience heavy flooding this year too,  if nothing is done at all.
Meanwhile, in Bauchi,  SEMA  confirmed that a nine –year old girl and three women  were  killed by floods.
A resident of  Bauchi Metropolis, Hajiya Aishatu Mohammed Shekal said it’s a problem they have faced for more than two decades. “We have drainage,  but it was too small, so  government most come and expand it,  even if it will touch some houses,  we  shall not mind”.
“Whenever the water comes,  would not sleep because the water can reach up to a chest of a man. It  destroys properties worth millions of naira , adding that it was  only during Ahmed Mu’azu’s  regime that government assisted us . But now our population has increased and  if government can expand the culvert along major roads it will reduce the problems , because the water comes  from Fadaman Mada, Unguwar Abuja and Karofi,  passing through our area”.
SEMA Chairman in Bauchi, Alhaji Mohammed Inuwa Bello, following a visit to affected areas said, “Farmlands and houses worth N76m were destroyed and the worst affected areas are Bauchi town and outskirts, other areas are Alkaleri , Zaki and Bogoro LGAs   of the state.
Despite the prediction by NIMET that Niger State will be among the states that will experience floods  during this year’s raining season, the state is yet to record any incidence of flooding.
Head of Relief and Rehabilitation of Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NISEMA) , Garba Salihu said despite this cheering news,  and apart from few negligible isolated cases in Mokwa, Lapai and Bargu his agency did not rest on its oars as it has intensified efforts  on sensitization.
According to him, part of the aggressive sensitization carried out by his agency was the quick identification of safe places that are at the neighborhood of the vulnerable communities, saying already the nearest health facilities and primary schools had since been identified for the people of such communities.
In Kogi state though the floods are  yet to come, but  government  has taken  precautionary measures in view of the prediction of another severe flooding  across the country.
Although, water level has not risen to the level it was last year by this time, deputy governor Yomi Awoniyi said the state government is not leaving anything to chance in its efforts to avoid a repeat of last year’s experience.
He said the state has been carrying out sensitization across the state, especially, the nine affected LGAs by consistently calling on those living in flood prone areas to move to higher grounds,  while boats  and life jackets  have  been procured  for safety during evacuation.
He also said the state government has commenced opening of blocked drainages and waterways so as to ensure free flow of water to the river.
“Unlike last year,  when the state had 200 camps,  government has now  identified 16 camps to be used as re settlement centers for flood victims.”
One of the residents at Gadumo who identified himself as Ibrahim Adejoh said though they were asked to relocate from the area,  but they  have  no any other place to go hence they are waiting , while monitoring the water level.      
Last year flood victims claimed that the treatment given to them in and outside camp was not impressive,  but  the government said the victims were fairly treated as  some had to resort to selling the raw food stuff given to them to make ends meet.
The victims said they were given between N3,000 and N4,000 which according to them was not enough,  but the state government said it was just an assistance.
Meanwhile, during 2012 flood, about 623,690 persons were displaced, property worth N40 billion, 61,775 houses were washed away while 304,775 hectares of farmland were equally washed away.
In Jigawa about thirteen villages spread across seven LGAs  have been sacked  by flood and ice storm,  according to the SEMA . The executive secretary of SEMA, Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Waziri, told Weekly Trust that the  flood which started in some LGAs  last week has rendered hundreds of people homeless and destroyed farm lands and houses.
“ Apart from the flood which affected villages in Hadeijia, Gumel, Ringim, Sule – Tankarkar, Kiyawa and Gagarawa, Baubura and Taura  LGAS, we also experienced  for the first time, ice storms in Guntam village in Gwiwa  LGA, which  destroyed farmlands. Information available to us shows that hundreds of houses have been destroyed while a lot of people have been displaced so far”.
“ My agency has already commenced the distribution of relief materials while   the state government flood  committee headed by the deputy governor has also swung into action in the affected communities”, he added.
Fourteen   LGAs  in Kano State were badly affected by the flood which killed one person and displaced 1, 489 persons across the state, authorities confirmed. 
A torrential rainfall which lasted five hours washed away the  remains of a graveyard which has been used by the community for about 27 years, thus exhuming  corpses.
Chairman of `Yankaba Youth Development Association, Rabi’u Ado said the remains of 35 people were recovered and that the contents of many other graves were washed away.
“The flood first brought down the fence of the cemetery before washing away the contents of graves”, he said
At Tinshama Quarters in Hotoron Arewa of Nassarawa LGA,   over 15 houses were destroyed displacing no less than 30 households.
According to some affected residents of the area, the heavy rain started at about 1:47pm and lasted for almost six hours. Malam Iro Dan Musa, a resident told Weekly Trust  that his house was damaged as a result of the heavy downpour, leaving him with  no option than to relocate  in order to save his life and properties .
Many believe that the way out is to remove such illegal structures erected on waterways
When contacted, the Director Operation of Kano State Emergency Agency, Mallam Abdullahi Aminu Minjibir said apart from the graveyard that was affected by the flood, a total of 471 houses were destroyed during the heavy rain.
“One person died, four others are missing and a total of 1, 489 persons have been displaced,  as a result of the flood that occurred in the state last Friday. A total of 14  LGAs areas were affected in the state. Six of the LGAs are in the state metropolis while the remaining eight are on the  outskirt,” he said.
He however said his agency is partnering with NEMA on the plight of the affected persons.
While urging the people of the state to clear drainages and waterways in their areas, he said the state government has set up a committee to enlighten people on the dangers inherent in blocking drainages.

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, yesterday disagreed with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, saying some young Nigerians entrusted with leadership positions have done wonderfully well.

Obasanjo had at a public function in Ibadan, Oyo State, recently mentioned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former governor of Lagos State Bola Tinubu, former Speaker House of Representatives Salisu Buhari, former Bayelsa State Governor Deprieye Alamieyeseigha as young leaders who have failed Nigeria.
But speaking at an interactive session with journalists to mark his 72 years birthday yesterday in Minna, Niger State, Babangida said many young Nigerian leaders should rather be commended for living above board.
 “Our expectation about the younger generation is very high but there are some other young men that have equally done well, they are not doing badly,” the former president remarked.
The former military president also dismissed fears that Nigeria may disintegrate owing to tension ahead of 2015 general elections, saying the nation would survive as one indivisible entity.
He said the present political upheavals being experienced in Nigeria are not enough for a country to disintegrate, saying “Forget about the country disintegrating in 2015, I cannot see it happening. Nations don’t just go into disintegration. Two, three years before that the signs would have been there, the signs would have been ominous. Certainly there are no such signs today and those talking about disintegration are people I think do not know Nigeria.
 “My findings have not indicated any serious threat to the corporate existence of the country in 2015. I know it will not happen, although people say all sorts of things simply to cause fears and panic among Nigerians”, he added.
According to him, Nigeria is one of the most amazing countries in the world, when you are outside the country, you would be thinking that the country is about to collapse but only to realize that when you return home all that you have been reading about is not just so.
Babangida, who reiterated his earlier statement of never to seek elective office in the country, said instead he would continue to play a role of statesmanship by giving advice.

PATIENCE’S EVENT CAUSES GRIDLOCK IN ABUJA

Traffic gridlock caused by the Women for Peace and Empowerment rally organised by First Lady Patience Jonathan in Abuja yesterday.

Motorists and commuters who had anything to do in the heart of Abuja yesterday faced hardship as all roads leading to the Central Area District were closed for a rally organised by First Lady Patience Jonathan.

Mrs Jonathan brought women from the 36 states of the federation into Abuja for what she tagged “Celebration of Nigerian Women for Peace and Empowerment” thereby creating big traffic crisis.
Many workers especially those whose offices are in the Federal Secretariat near the Eagles Square, venue of the rally, could not access their offices as the area was cordoned by armed security men.
Our reporters who monitored the situation reported that workers who insisted getting to their offices trekked long distances.
Commuters coming from Nyanya-Mararaba axis passing through the Police headquarters had to stop at the popular Bullet Junction, while those passing through Ahmadu Bello Way to Banex Junction, had to stop at the ministry of finance bridge as the roads were barricaded.
Some commuters who spoke to our reporters lamented the situation, saying it caused them a lot of hardship. A commuter who simply gave his name as Francis said, “As you can see, everybody is trekking. I have been trekking from Bullet Junction. I am going to NICON (Transcorp Hilton) Hotel. If not because of this, I would have boarded a taxi. I’m not happy at all.”
A female commuter who was going to her office in Wuse II said she trekked for more than a kilometre to connect her place of work.
“I’ve not seen any taxi around here. It’s really pathetic for most of us as you can see,” she noted.
Another commuter John lamented that he was very tired and was not sure of getting to work effectively with the kind of situation.
A taxi driver told our reporter that the rally caused serious traffic gridlock in some parts of the Central Business District, especially in places like Area 11, Central Mosque, NNPC/Defence College Junction among others.
Other commuters who spoke with our reporters said  although they had experienced similar situation in the past, yesterday’s case was the worst as it was not a public holiday, perhaps suggesting that it would have been held on a weekend.
The people of Lagos last year raised an alarm when the First Lady visited for one of her programmes.
Apart from heavy security and blockage of roads, a police chopper hovered round the venue of the event for several hours providing checks.
Women professional bodies and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO), market women, religious organizations, wives of military personnel, paramilitary organizations and delegates from the states among others participated in the event.
Speaking, Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo who was special guest of honour reiterated government’s commitment to the empowerment of women saying it targets capturing 500,000 women and youths in its Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) annually.
He said President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration has significantly increased women’s participation in politics and decision-making stressing that government is committed to the conventions, treaties and protocols it ratified for the protection and empowerment of women

The peace efforts in the ruling People’s Democratic Party appeared to have recorded some gains with a reconciliation meeting held last night between national chairman Bamanga Tukur and three of the five governors who have been vociferously critical of him.

Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) held a closed door meeting with Tukur at his residence in Abuja, after which a spokesman for the PDP chairman said they had reconciled.
But the two other governors in the so-called G-5 team—Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger and Adamawa’s Murtala Nyako—did not attend the meeting.
Tukur’s spokesman Oliver Okpara said in a statement that during yesterday’s meeting “it was resolved that they (governors) have returned to the leadership of the party and that all that happened in the past which involved grievances, accusations and counter accusations were done because of gap in communication amidst disinformation from some quarters between them and the leadership of the party.
“And having listened to the national chairman, they are now properly informed about the happening in the party and promised that from henceforth, they will work in harmony and unity with the leadership of the party and also pledged their loyalty under Dr. Bamanga Tukur.
“National chairman after listening to them also promised as a father to forgive and forget all that has happened in the past and assured of the leadership of the party to work together with the governors stressing that any member of the party that feels aggrieved over any activity of the party  should utilise all the internal mechanisms and platforms set out by the party to reconcile aggrieved members under the cardinal three ‘R’s of the national chairman which is Reconciliation, Reformation and Rebuilding.
“The chairman said that their visit was a confirmation of consultations adopted by the leadership of the party to ensure total reconciliation of aggrieved members as set out by the National Reconciliation Committee headed by (Bayelsa State) Gov. Dickson.”
No specific reason was given for the absence of Nyako and Aliyu, but Okpara said the participating “governors apologised on behalf of the other governors notable (sic), Adamawa and Niger state governors.”
When contacted, the Niger State governor’s spokesman Danladi Ndayebo told Daily Trust he could only say that Aliyu had travelled abroad.
Nyako’s absence is telling, as his feud with Tukur had been at the heart of the crisis in the party.
The PDP chairman last year edged out the Adamawa State party executive loyal to Nyako, igniting hostilities between him and the governors.
As the crisis snowballed, the Tukur-led national working committee of the party suspended Wamakko but later recalled him after series of condemnation.
Nyako’s spokesman Ahmed Sajoh could not be reached by telephone for comments last night, but secretary of the governor’s PDP faction in Adamawa Mr Pheanece Philemon said they would welcome a genuine reconciliation.
Philemon said his faction must be recognised by the national secretariat because the congresses that brought the Joel Madaki faction were not approved by the national executive committee of the party.
He said also that reconciliation would only by possible if Tukur operates within the framework of the law.
One of the issues fuelling hostilities between the governors and Tukur is the schism in the Nigeria Governors Forum. Tukur and the Presidency back factional NGF chairman Jonah Jang while the G-5 governors support Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amechi who won the forum’s elections in May.
The three governors at last night’s meeting, which lasted between 4pm and 8pm, insisted that Amaechi remains the chairman of the forum, a party insider told Daily Trust.
The governors had held a similar meeting with President Jonathan recently where they were said to have demanded for the sack of Tukur. But during yesterday’s meeting they denied making such demand, a source said.
Instead, they said their grievance with the party was that they were not being carried along and that it seemed they had been marked for the worse treatment by the party.
The governors were said to have informed the PDP chairman that their visit was both reconciliatory and consultative, explaining that he was part of the political leaders they had intended seeing as part of their efforts to finding solution to the many problems in the party.
